LSU's Own, Patrick Peterson, Drafted Fifth By Arizona

Former Blanche Ely standout Patrick Peterson was drafted fifth in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday.

Peterson was the SEC's Defensive Player of the Year and the SEC's Special Teams Player of the Year in 2010.

He also was awarded the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back and the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's best defensive player.

Before Peterson, the highest any Ely football player went in the draft was James Jones in 1979. He was the 13th pick in the first round to Detroit. Jones was Peterson's coach in high school.

Peterson -- a cornerback who was known as Patrick Johnson during his days at Ely -- finished the regular season with 36 tackles and four interceptions. He also had 1.5 tackles for loss, six pass break-ups and a blocked field goal. He left LSU after his junior year.

Ely junior wide receiver Avery Johnson, Peterson's brother, has already verbally committed to play football at LSU.
